𝗣𝗮𝘁𝘁𝘆 𝗢𝗱𝗼𝗺, 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝟰𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲

Worden fourth-grade teacher Patty Odom never dreamed of being a teacher. She said teaching found her.

“I worked at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital for several years before starting a family. I stayed home with my children and began thinking of a new career that would allow me to be there for them once they started school. I was aware that my new career would have to involve working with children and it soon became apparent that teaching was the path for me.”

Odom is in her 21st year as a fourth-grade teacher in the district. She began as a long-term sub in Worden, spent 17 years at Woodland and is currently in her third year back at Worden.

“Being a teacher is my career and hobby. I enjoy learning and discovering new, engaging ways to teach that allows me to help all students achieve their learning goals and to feel confident as a ‘super learner’.”

Odom enjoys teaching all subjects, but if she had to choose one as her favorite, it would be science.

"Science naturally lends itself to hands-on experiences and that is my happy place where so much of the student curiosity and discovery takes place.”

For Odom, her students are the best thing about teaching fourth grade.

“Watching my students grow and develop as learners while supporting one another is very rewarding.”

When she is not in the classroom, Odom enjoys spending time with her husband, children, and grandchildren. She also loves the outdoors and takes the time to hike and backpack as often as possible. #d7proud

The Polar Plunge made its way to Hadley House this afternoon.

Thanks to our plungers Andrea Grotefendt (Director of Special Education and School Support), Dr. Patrick Shelton (Superintendent), Dr. Adam Garrett (Asst. Superintendent - Personnel) and Carey Francis (Superintendent/Board of Education Secretary), as well as our dumpers, AJ Brewster, Caroline Marcus and Lincoln Garrett!

Thus far, District #7 has raised over $14,000 for Special Olympics with donations still coming in until the end of March. #d7proud

Kindergarten teacher Bridget Steiner has spent all 26 years of her career at Nelson.

From an early age, she always wanted to be a teacher.

“I have always found joy in helping others. Teaching is an opportunity each day to help students achieve their own success.”

Steiner enjoys the growth that happens during a kindergarten year.

“Each day is filled with mini celebrations of what each student is learning. I also love getting to know each student and their different personalities.”

Her favorite things to teach are math and reading.

“I love doing art projects as well and love teaching students about kindness. We have a classroom that promotes helping others and supporting each other.”

When she is not in the classroom, Steiner enjoys spending time with family and friends. #d7proud

Congrats to Lincoln Middle School, who placed 3rd out of 40 teams at the Madison County Jr. Olympiad contest at SIUE earlier this week! An Olympiad style contest has students solve problems that use limited resources, limited time, and have measurable goals. #d7proud

Shoutout to the 2nd grade Kindness Club at @Leclai

Shoutout to the 2nd grade Kindness Club at @Leclaire Elementary School. They raised more than $500 selling Smencils in January and when asked where they wanted to donate that money, they all said the Metro East Humane Society. Today, they got to present that check. #d7proud

Not only did the Nelson Elementary School 2nd grad

Not only did the Nelson Elementary School 2nd grade teachers make reading fun, but they also made learning about different genres of books fun on Friday morning with the “Nelson Book Bakery”.

After learning about a variety of genres, from fiction to poetry and mysteries to fairytales, the students had the opportunity to read books from several different genres. They then picked their favorite book from that genre, designed a “cupcake” of it and put it in their bakery box. At the end, they had a box full of their favorite books!

Rumor is the students were also treated with a real bakery item at the end too. #d7proud

2nd grade students in Ms. Hinnen’s class at Nelson became honorary Annie’s Frozen Custard employees this morning. The class was treated to a visit by one of the managers who took the students through a virtual trip of the shop. They learned all about Annie’s, all the flavors of custard they make, and the different jobs employees have.

The students then participated in four different stations where they placed orders they created and paid using play money, created sweet treats (unfortunately for them, not with real custard), learned how to perfectly top a sundae with (real) whipped cream, and craft frozen custard treat station.

Ms. Hinnen, who works part-time at Annie’s, said her class loves hearing stories about her job there, so she thought it would be neat for them to see how it all works. #d7proud

𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲

𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 is a top priority in District #7. Our zero-tax-rate-change bond issue on the April 4 ballot, will address essential safety and security needs, which includes double entry doors at all District #7 schools.

In addition to those EHS students that take classe

In addition to those EHS students that take classes at the Collinsville Vocational Area Center, EHS also has students that are part of the Illinois Laborers & Contractors Joint Apprenticeship and Training Program. Those students participate in the Construction Craft Preparation Program (CCPP), which provides educational activities in both the classroom and in an actual supervised work setting. High school students enter the program at the beginning of their junior year with competition at the end of their senior year and learn the necessary skills needed to begin a career as a construction craft laborer. #d7proud

Columbus Elementary School 3rd graders completed an area and perimeter project in the hall this week. The teachers put painters tape in different shapes on the floor (20 in all). One class at a time, students went into the hall and found the perimeter and area of each figure on the floor and noted it on their paper. Walking the perimeter and stepping to count for area and perimeter both, was very helpful for students to truly grasp the concepts! #d7proud
