Lauren Davis has taught an array of subjects, but for all 11 years of her teaching career, she has taught at least one language arts or reading class every school year.

“The power and importance of language arts is what drives me to push my students to become the best writers possible. Along with writing, I love watching students develop a love for reading by finding their favorite author or genre. Reading is powerful because it allows us to step into other worlds, break away from reality, and learn history about ancient places or important leaders that have gone before us.”

Davis, who is in her second year at Liberty, has always wanted to be a teacher.

“I would play school, and “teach” my Cabbage Patch Dolls with a small dry erase board I had in my bedroom. My desire to teach came from the positive and caring teachers I had in elementary school. I also love interacting with people, and I love the excitement school brings.”

Like all teachers, she lives for that “light bulb” moment.

“However, the most fruitful part of teaching is watching your students grow both academically and socially. I love interacting with my students and watching them interact with their peers. I enjoy the diversity in my classroom and showing all students kindness as they develop a love for learning.”

She also has a great appreciation for the attitude sixth graders have regarding school and their teachers.

“Sixth grade is when students become independent learners and figure out who they are. I enjoy helping students learn to study and prepare for tests and big projects. Many skills they learn in sixth grade help them achieve remarkable success in middle school which they carry on to high school and into their adult life.”

When she’s not in the classroom, Davis can be found outside with her two boys and husband. They enjoy walking, biking, working out, playing in adult softball and volleyball leagues, and relaxing at Table Rock Lake. #d7proud

In 2019, District 7 partnered with the @Edwardsville Public Library and First Student Bus Transportation Company to increase student access to books and awareness of the power of reading in hopes to grow enthusiastic readers.

Stories on the Move, a program that puts books donated from the Edwardsville Public Library on 15 District 7 buses, emerged out of this collaborative effort. The concept is simple. Children are offered a book as they enter the bus. They can choose to read it on the bus, put it back at the end of their trip, or take it home to help build their home libraries. The book does not need to be returned.

Unfortunately, Stories on the Move was suspended as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, with the support through a donation from @Dieterich Bank, this initiative comes alive again this week. #d7proud

This collaboration between community entities such as Dieterich Bank, the Edwardsville Public Library, First Student Bus Transportation Company and District 7 is just one of many ways the community works together for the good of our children. #d7proud

Last night, Tigers Giving Forward held its talent Last night, Tigers Giving Forward held its talent show Extravaganza to help raise money that is used to support District 7 families and staff members who suffer from chronic health issues. More than $700 was raised last night with a large portion of that coming from students buying raffle tickets to shave the heads of Mrs. Julia Doll, Mr. Dan Morrissey, and Mrs. Jessica DeWald.

To date, Tigers Giving Forward has donated $20,000 to families suffering from financial hardship due to gas, food, childcare due to hospitalizations, appointments, etc.

EPIC and Student Council also joined forces to make this happen. #d7proud

Woodland Elementary 3rd grade teacher Heather Chapman has always known she’s wanted to be a teacher – and for 28 years that’s what she has been doing.

“Both of my parents were teachers, so I guess it runs in my blood.”

Chapman loves making meaningful connections with students and their families.

Her favorite thing to teach is language arts.

“It gives me an opportunity to see inside the brains of my students. When they do a deep dive on a piece of literature, they express their opinions and experiences, and I am often surprised by the deep thinking that happens. I love when their ideas surprise me; it makes me smile every single time!”

In addition to third graders making her smile, Chapman also said the best part of teaching that grade is that they are funny, sweet, and adorable.

When she’s not in the classroom, Chapman likes to spend time with family and friends. #d7proud

The Edwardsville and Collinsville School Districts The Edwardsville and Collinsville School Districts used their rivalry as an incentive to directly help their communities through the United Way.

Both school districts held United Way campaigns during October with superintendents Dr. Patrick Shelton (Edwardsville) and Dr. Brad Skertich (Collinsville) agreeing to a friendly competition to see which district could raise the most money per employee. The losing superintendent would have to wear the other school’s colors at a basketball game between the two conference foes.

Together, the two schools collected $13,395.24 with Edwardsville winning the challenge.

As a result, Dr. Skertich joined Dr. Shelton I’m wearing Tiger orange last night during the Edwardsville and Collinsville boys’ basketball game (in which the Tigers won in OT!).

“While it was a friendly competition between two great districts, the winners are truly the many organizations in Madison County that benefit from the United Way, and the students and families served by those organizations,” said Dr. Shelton. “I appreciate employees in both districts contributing to such a worthy cause.” #d7proud

Albert Cassens fifth-grade teacher Rob Nunn got his first college degree in radio and television, but quickly learned the field was not for him.

“While working at the YMCA latchkey program after graduation, I realized how much I liked working with kids and went back to get my teaching certificate.”

Nunn has now been teaching for 18 years. He spent three years at Columbus before moving over to Cassens when it opened and is just one of a handful of folks that are left from when the building opened.

Connecting kids with books that they enjoy is his favorite part of this job.

“Some kids come to fifth grade as avid readers, and I am happy to keep throwing fuel on that fire. For others, I get to help light the spark to show them that there are books out there for everyone. And once that spark is lit, I get to spend the rest of the year reinforcing that feeling to help them grow and continue to see themselves as readers.”

Teaching fifth graders means his students have autonomy and well-developed personalities at this point.

“They know what they like and don't like but are still young enough to want to please their parents and teachers. It is fun to see all the different personalities at play in lessons and group work. I taught third grade for the first 7 years of my career, and the growth that occurs in kids between those two years always amazes me.”

When he is not in the classroom, Nunn likes to spend time at home with his family. He and his wife enjoy reading and drinking coffee each night. During baseball season, Nunn typically has the Cardinals games on TV and during the warmer months, he can be found outside BBQing. #d7proud
Columbus Elementary 3rd graders participated in a Columbus Elementary 3rd graders participated in a multi-cultural study of holiday celebrations around the world. Each child journeyed aboard "Holiday Airlines" to learn about holiday traditions in places such as England, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, and Mexico, to name a few! As they traveled and experienced the journey, they were responsible for completing a scrapbook to keep mementos, photos, and facts from their trip to each country. They will enjoyed snacks related to that country. Such a fun, interactive, and an incredible learning experience! #d7proud
