District 7’s Emerson Excellence in Teaching Recipient Named

The Excellence in Teaching Awards program, sponsored by Emerson Electric, annually recognizes educators in the St. Louis metropolitan area – from kindergarten teachers to college professors – who are examples of excellence in their field.

The Edwardsville Community Unit School District recently named Ms. Lisa Allen as their Emerson Excellence in Teaching recipient.  Ms. Allen is a reading specialist at Leclaire Elementary School in Edwardsville.

Lisa has been with the District for twenty-two years, both as a 1st grade teacher and, for the past thirteen years, a reading specialist. Lisa was recognized for her stellar teaching abilities, her ability to lead others, and the character she displays each and every day.

As the reading specialist at Leclaire Elementary she provides reading intervention services to children who need additional support. She also works side-by-side with young and veteran teachers providing staff development opportunities at the building and District level.  Her influence impacts students district-wide.

Dr. Cornelia Smith, Leclaire Elementary School principal says, “Ms. Allen’s commitment to the students of District 7 is above reproach and she sets an exemplary example for us all.  She embodies all the qualities that one would expect from an excellent educator and more.”

During her summer break, Lisa continues to work for children. At the community level, she works diligently with a community-wide “free lunch” program with multiple locations across District 7 communities where hungry children can grab a daily lunch at no cost.

Ms. Allen also runs a building summer reading program and provides popsicles to the families of students who meet their personal goals.

“I have had the honor to work side-by-side with Ms. Allen for over twenty years. She is an amazing teacher, a dedicated professional and a true friend,” said Cathie Wright, District 7 Director for Curriculum.

Ms. Allen will be recognized at the annual Emerson Excellence in Teaching banquet this winter.
